John Albert Bauer (4 June 1882 – 20 November 1918) was a Swedish painter and illustrator. Mystical landscapes and the mythology of Sweden are themes he is often associated with. One of his best known works is a collection of Swedish folktales and fairy tales called “Among Gnomes and Trolls”.
John Bauer studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts where also illustrate stories and books and magazines. He was inspired by travels to Lappland, Germany and Italy and these influences carried over to his work. He preferred watercolors, but also made prints, oil paintings and frescoes. As you look through my gallery you will probably notice that there are many deep shadows and dark colors, haunting and mystical, and from within this darkness there is usually a bright illuminated point creating a sense of drama.
Unfortunately John Bauer, his wife and child drowned while on a ship. A very tragic ending to this talented visionary and his loved ones.
