Elsa Beskow (1874–1953) was a Swedish children’s book author and illustrator. She is often called the ‘Beatrix Potter’ of Scandinavia and once you have looked at her illustrated world of whimsy you will know why. In the pages of her books fantasy, fairy and nature combine to form a world that is enchanting to children, and to the child within adults too. I love all of her books that I have had the chance to borrow or own and love sharing them with my children, as much as I like looking through them myself and remembering my own childhood. She was educated during and inspired by the Art Nouveau movement and you will often see her book pages framed in a decorative Art Nouveau style. Elsa Beskow studied Art Education at Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Her popular Swedish children’s books include Children of the Forest, Peter in Blueberry Land, and Pelle’s New Suit. Beskow received international recognition for her simple, cheerful stories and outstanding illustrations and children all over the world still enjoy them today!
