Mystical Art Nouveau Style and the Glasgow Girls – Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh

Art Nouveau and the Glasgow School were two distinct but related artistic movements that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Art Nouveau, characterized by its flowing lines, organic forms, and intricate details, sought to break away from the traditional styles of the time and embrace a more modern aesthetic. On the other hand, the distinctive Glasgow Style, which originated in Scotland, was part of the international Art Nouveau movement, and was focused on creating a unique blend of art and design, incorporating elements of nature, symbolism, and craftsmanship. Both movements were influential in their own right, leaving a lasting impact on the world of art and design. I am very inspired by the artwork of the women artists of the Glasgow School and will include some of my favorite works over the next few posts in this Blog. The first artist whose work I want to share is that of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh.

Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh was an artist known as part of the Glasgow Girls and the Glasgow Four. As you look at the gallery of her work I have included, I hope you will agree that she has a unique style and creative vision. MacDonald’s pieces are a reflection of her deep emotions and profound thoughts, often exploring themes of nature, spirituality, and the human experience. I find it very interesting that Margaret and her sister Frances (whom I will also include a Blog post on) were said to have visions gifted by the Holy Spirit and even could speak in tongues. How much of this mysticism was translated into their artwork is something I can’t help but think about as I admire their body of work.

Margaret MacDonald worked with meticulous attention to detail as you can see thick textured gesso, wire construction, gems and other sculptural detail in her work that in my opinion differentiate her from many other artists. If you look closely in the detailed images below you will be able to identify these sculptural elements.
